How did P.A.R. begin?
On July 1st, 2020, I saw an Instagram story about how Bakers Against Racism (@bakersagainstracism) had raised almost $2 million - with the world’s biggest bake sale! - in a massive effort to raise money in support of organizations combating racism. I was awed at the idea that hundreds of bakers all over the world using their talents were collectively able to make such an impact. Feeling inspired, I searched for a broad coordinated campaign of printmakers against racism making art that I could join. That search is what led to this project. I know there are many out there who have been on the ground, already raising money, awareness, and engaged in this work. I hope Printmakers Against Racism galvanizes the rest of the printmakers to help too - it is time!

BIO
My name is Desiree Aspiras (she/her) and I am an educator, therapist, and printmaker in San Diego who deeply values how art and storytelling can transform us and connect us to empathy and meaning. My printmaking and book arts projects have been exhibited in spaces in San Diego, including the Athenaeum Art Center. Prior to becoming a therapist, I was a fundraising professional in arts organizations such as the Orange County Performing Arts Center and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. I have a Masters in Marital and Family Therapy from the University of San Diego and BA in Political Science from UCLA. I now currently enjoy teaching counseling courses to masters level students, providing therapy in a small private practice, and having a family with two young boys.
